M: How children were entertained. Also in that by the looks of the painting time people just let their children run free at any age.
A: The Painting tells us this because you can clearly see the 4 children of different ages roaming free in town and as soon as they see the two men with what it look like as puppets they run straight for it
N: It is a painting
T: How is the message conveyed? The message is conveyed by the way the artist painted the children to look exited when they are running and also all the details like the expression on the children’s faces.
In this painting all the children are looking really happy and exited, because in some towns, some people would put on puppet shows to entertain the children so that their mothers could finish all the housework. Puppet shows were most children’s favourite thing to watch because they were funny and it was a creative way of telling a story. But when they were at home the children didn’t have this much fun because there mother had to do so many house hold chores, like making dinner, cleaning up, and basically do everything that the man wanted her to do, and she also had to look after the many children that the woman had. So she barely had any time to properly entertain her children.
Pretty much all-poor children (they were either a ronin, peasant, artisan or merchant), and had no proper education. Most of the children didn’t know how to write, or read and couldn’t speak that well.
The children would only watch the puppet shows when their mother was to busy to take care of them they would walk alone the streets trying to find something to play with and the oldest child from the family would usually carry the younger ones as shown in this picture and they would try and find something to play with, if it wasn’t a puppet show it would be maybe some small things on the ground like sticks and stones that they would make a game with. If the children came form a poor family they didn’t really have much to eat so running around the town would tire them out really fast, which was good for the mother because then she didn’t have to take care of them as much because they were always asleep. But it wasn’t good for the children’s health because the hey were always so hungry many of them would starve, especially the young ones because they still have to fully build up their immune system and gain their proper strength.
