M: The source tells us that the man has more power than the woman and in this image it looks like he is reprimanding her.
A: It tells us this because in this image the man is angrily looking at the woman with his fist out. Also the woman looks quite distressed about I’m guessing what the man is telling her.
N: A calligraphy painting
T: The message is conveyed by the expression that artist as painted on the people’s faces and the way that the man and woman are positioned, the man standing above the woman overpowering her
The Relationship between Husbands and Wives during the Tokugawa period was very over powering and you could defiantly tell that the dominate half’s in the relationships were the males. This secondary source will definitely help historians find out more about the relationship between husbands and wives in that particular period. When you look at this image you can already have a feel about who is the more dominate half and who is the one that makes all the decisions. There are some key features in this painting that show a little bit more about the relationship. The first one is their facial expressions. The mans facial expressions look quite stern and over powering, it also looks like he is commanding the woman to do something or he is telling her off. But if you compare his expressions to hers it’s like comparing two different things. she looks relaxed, possibly a little frightened, and harmless but the man looks really angry and seems to be in a really bad mood. Another feature about this painting is the way that the husband and wife are painted. The woman is positioned on the right roughly in the middle with her back to the man, with her head tilted to the side, the man is positioned standing above her on the top left of the painting looking down at her with his fist up near her face. This defiantly shows that he has more power over her and that she is basically his puppet for him to control. The marriage during this time wasn’t like the marriage that we have today. Their parents usually arranged their marriages, and they were usually married at a really young age, and because they’re so young they don’t get to decide who to marry. The bad part about being a woman is that when you do get married you are basically his servant and you have to do everything he says or else you would be punished. As you can imagine being a woman in the Tokugawa period wasn’t ideal. Some of the jobs and responsibilities that the woman had to do were, taking care of the children and entertaining them and as I said before being the servant of the house.
